Charlie was born and raised on a dairy and crop farm near Newton, Kansas. He attended Kansas State University where he received a B.S. in Ag Education in 1972 and later a Master's in Agribusiness in 2007. Charlie has a vast knowledge of production agriculture as well as agricultural economics.

Charlie resides in Cimarron, Kansas with his wife, Carolyn.
